چکیده

I N A PREVIOUS STUDY, it was shown that erythrocytosis was present in 11.7 per cent of southern Chinese patients with hepatocellular carcinoma but that the mechanism of production remained obscure.’ Plasma erythropoiesis-stimulating factor ( ESF ), assayed on the fasted rat, was not increased in four subjects studied. Subsequent reports of the existence of erythrocytosis in hepatocellular carcinoma have appeared in the literature29 and the high incidence has been confirmed.9 Plasma ESF activity has been assayed in three instances,4’8’10 but in only one’#{176} was an increase found. Extracts of the tumor have been assayed on two occasions4’8 with negative results. Since it has been shown that measurement of red cell radioiron incorporation in polycythemic mice is a more sensitive and specific method for the bioassay of ESF,” further ESF assays by this method have been carried out in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma. The present communication reports the results of these studies.

Prolyl-4-Hydroxylase 2 Potentially Contributes to Hepatocellular Carcinoma-Associated Erythrocytosis by Maintaining Hepatocyte Nuclear Factor-4α Expression.

BACKGROUND Increased red blood cell count (Erythrocytosis) is an important paraneoplastic syndrome of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and is a significant risk factor for lethal lung artery thromboembolism. HCC-associated erythrocytosis is partially caused by the ability of several HCC cells to produce erythropoietin (EPO). Prolyl-4-hydroxylase 2 (PHD2) is an enzyme encoded by the gene EGLN1. Th...

Gene expression of erythropoietin in hepatocellular carcinoma.

A 68-year-old man with hepatocellular carcinoma complicated by erythrocytosis showed an increased plasma level of immunoreactive erythropoietin (EPO). Northern blot analysis and RT-PCR (reverse transcriptase and polymerase chain reaction) of EPO mRNA extracted from a surgical specimen indicated high expression of EPO mRNA in the tumor tissue. Histological and immunocytochemical examination show...

A possible mechanism for the erythrocytosis associated with hepatocellular carcinoma in man.

these pathological states, elevated levels of erythropoietin (ESF) have been detected in the serum, plasma, or urine, and in the affected tissues or encvsted fluid. Such observations have led to the speculation that increased production of the ESF by the tumor tissue may be responsible for the development of the accompanying erythrocytosis. In attempting to determine the mechanism underlying th...

Epidemiology and Prognosis of Paraneoplastic Syndromes in Hepatocellular Carcinoma

Background. Paraneoplastic syndromes (PNS) such as hypercalcaemia, hypercholesterolaemia, and erythrocytosis have been described in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Aims. (1) To examine the prevalence, clinical characteristics, and survival of PNS in HCC patients and (2) to evaluate the extent to which each individual PNS impacts on patient survival. Methods. We prospectively evaluated the preva...

Status of serum alpha feto-protein (AFP) and midkine (MDK) levels in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma

Introduction: Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is sixth common cancers worldwide and predominant in Asia and Africa. A number of evidence suggests a possible role of midkine (MDK) and α-fetoprotein (AFP) in the pathogenesis of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Materials and methods: We studied MDK and AFP in patients with HCC or in healthy controls. MDK and AFP was measured by enzyme linked immuno...
